Youth Homeless rate at all-time high
April 8th 2008 02:31
After two decades without significant data, a study released today by The National Youth Commission has shown that the number of Homeless Youth has doubled over the past 20 years.
In a scathing tribute to the nation's neglect of our Youth, the report claims that more than 36,000 Australians between the ages of 12 and 25 now sleep on the streets every night. At present less than 1 in 2 homeless youth have access to accomodation on any given day. The housing affordability and rental crises of the past year have fuelled a deterioration in the homeless figures to the point where the problem is becoming a national shame.
Aside from making 80 recommendations, the report also declared that more than $1 billion needed to be spent to address the problem over the next decade, a figure that is unlikely to be even considered by either the state or federal governments.
Despite a decade of economic growth, the Y Generation has been left behind. The mining and resources boom has done little to help the issue. With yearly reductions over the past decade to funding for social programs at a state and federal level no end appears in sight. And with less than a third of Youth Homeless having access to adequate out-reach programs, the figures are expected to continue their march upwards.
mY GENERATION deserves better!
