Young Kids Aren’t Using the Net
August 19th 2008 08:57
Although kids are generally assumed to be incredibly tech-savvy, until the age of 11, few are heavy Internet users. Only around 50 percent (45 for girls, 55 for boys) under this age are using the net for more than an hour per week.
Many are in fact using “old” media, like the television, or surprisingly, reading books. Thankfully, young boys are still playing with real-world toys, like water guns and trucks, crayons and puzzles. While both sexes still have an interest in figurines.
Most of a child’s computer use before the age of 11 takes place at school, with almost 80% of kids saying their first exposure to the technology was within a classroom. But the use of virtual worlds by this age group is expected to grow by more than 250 percent by 2012.
Major child-friendly media players have been slow to react. But the turnaround has begun, with Nickelodeon and Disney launching virtual worlds this year to be built into a interactive media environment.
