Wrestling to become a Family Affair

A new marketing program by World Wrestling Entertainment is attempting to get the show a PG rating. New editing techniques and revised dialogue as well as small changes to character plots could see the shows move away from their “Sports-Entertainment” guise and further into the realm of Soap Opera.
Currently, Monday Night Raw and ECW are rated TV-14 in the US which means they are not suitable for PG audiences. Friday Night Smackdown already has a PG rating because they use less realistic violence in their programming, and because it’s on a Friday night.
The WWE has assured die-hard viewers that the shows won’t become tamer as a result of the changes. But the programming will focus more on the “over-the-top” characters and storylines (if that were possible). The attention-grabbing stunts could soon become a thing of the past. Anything considered “outrageous” may have to go by the way side.
The programmers and writers are hoping that the new format will appeal to younger audiences and families. The company also recently launched a kids mag and website which targets the same demographics with its original content.
WWE Studios is also going to steer away from its R rated content. A rep said yesterday “It's the continuing evolution of the company to create content for our growing audience of younger viewers.”
