What Generation Y Girls Want

A recent conference entitled “What Teens Want” has revealed some interesting information about what young girls want these days, and it might well surprise you.
Adolescent girls are more self-confident than ever. Generally they are happy with their appearance, with most describing themselves firstly as “attractive” followed by “fun”. But more than 59 percent believe they are smarter than guys their own age and they apparently rate “intelligence” as a valuable and attractive trait in both sexes.
Interestingly, they are NOT obsessed with celebrities. Apparently 34% are too self-involved to look up to celebs because they see themselves as their own best role models. Less than a quarter believe that their mother is a role model for them, so apparently family isn’t high on their list of priorities.
Although most young women hope to marry, they generally believe that their children, not their spouses will be the loves of their lives. But this may be due to what they perceive as discrimination against their sex. While in most Western countries we tend to imagine that sexual equality is paramount, women still believe that society falls well short of being egalitarian. More than 85 percent think that social double standards exist and a similar number believe that women are discriminated against in the work place.
And life for girls is apparently much tougher than for guys. More than 40 percent of girls describe themselves as “stressed out,” their male counter-parts are much calmer it seems with only 19 percent feeling overwrought. Almost three quarters are stressed about something, with “the future” a clear winner and money coming in second, leaving appearance an astounding third.
When asked what distinguishes Generation Y from their predecessors, young women were emphatic. “Creativity” is apparently the label they slap on themselves. Girls much prefer blogging to guys.
And shopping? Girls still love brands. But interestingly, interest seems to be fixed on “Victoria’s Secret”. The lingerie supplier was ranked number one by millennial girls, perhaps us blokes should be happy that our feminie counter parts have such good taste.
