Those Crazy Milennials - Taking over the workplace
May 30th 2008 04:26
A recent expose by the American CBS 60 minutes program has suggested that Milennials are narcicistic praise hounds. Raised by our baby boomer parents in an environment of positive re-enforcement, the program also adimits that Generation Y is is changing the face of the modern workplace.
Content to switch jobs after just weeks or months in the search for the ultimate position, Milennials exhibit little company loyalty. The program blames this on the way we were brought up. Too much praise and coddling right thoughout our school lives and even into college has created "A generation without a work ethic".
"If this generation knows anything its that there are more jobs than there are young people to fill them."
However, the fact remains that Generation Y are the young people of the day. We are the ones who are taking up new jobs in every industry as our Baby Boomer parents retire. But we also aren't putting our careers at the top of our personal priorities.
The careerism of Generation X is starting to fade with the Milennials. Instead of focusing on employment and career advancement, Milennials are choosing to put more energy into friends and family.
Companies are finding it difficult to react to this trend. But those that do are often gifted with energetic employees. Companies that press their emploees buttons with positive re-inforcement will be the most likely to retain staff and increase output potential. But they can't do it on their own. The worker support industry now represents a 50 billion dollar industry in the US. All aimed at keeping Milennials happy.
HOW GOOD IS THAT?!
