The ONLY way to stop alcohol fuelled violence
May 19th 2008 10:36
Tax? Are you kidding me? STUPID!! That is the only way to describe the Federal Government's plan to curb the spieght of alcohol fuelled violence in Australia's pubs and clubs.
Bringing the tax on mixed drinks into line with straight spirits makes perfect sense. Go for it. But the ridiculous nature of the justification for this is incredible. It's almost as though no person in the Rudd Government has spoken to anyone from Generation Y in their lives.
Sample reaction from Generation Y to a tiny tax increase:
"$1 extra for 2 standard drinks? You mean I don't have to carry as much change? Wicked!!!"
I come from Wollongong, one of Australia's most violent drunken cities. Just this saturday in the space of an hour I saw 2 people have glasses smashed over their heads at a late night Crown St establishment.
But you're in luck Australia. There is a very simple way to curb the incidence of binge drinking amongst young people...
Don't serve them more than one standard drink at a time!!
Doubles, double shots, long necks, even strong beers and pints all have more alcohol in them than is safe for any single person to be consuming before it gets warm. And thats not even considering the dreaded Double Black...with or without a shot of raspberry, these are the great night killers. 1.9 standard drinks for $8? No university student can rationally pass up such a fantastic bargain. And after 5 of them in an hour most of them can't think, let alone rationally.
Kevin, if you want young people to stop hitting each other in drunken rampages, legislate that NO drink should be served in a pub or club that contains more than 1 standard drink.
With a little luck Generation Y will spend so much time running to and from the bathrooms they won't have time to go brawling around the dance floor. By all means keep your damn tax, otherwise you won't be able to afford the police to lock us in the drunk tanks, right?

im from newcastle, probably the other most violent drunken city and i know very well that people who are hardcore with alcohol arent drinking vodka cruisers haha
how about:
- actually enforcing RSA in pubs and clubs
- actually enforcing alcohol free zones on the streets and having a police presence and community attitudes that "drunk and disorderly" (esp with regards to violence) is not acceptable and is a crime
you know why people glass each other in the face, because theres no consequences, you can be as violent as you like and get off scott free
real surly drunks drink whole bottles of bourban and casks of wine before they go out . . . not a lemon ruski lol
