The Mobile Education Revolution
May 26th 2008 09:57
The introduction of mobile phone technology to the social landscape some years ago caused major problems for Australian teachers and their classrooms. In NSW, schools were somewhat slow to clamp down on the presence of mobile phones at high schools. In response to questions about privacy, it now seems that the overwhelming majority have banned the use of these technologies.
However, this could prove to be a shortsighted move on the part of the education administration. The use of Mobile Technology over the next decade or so is expected to be the next great thing in education.
A report published in TechWorldNews entitled "Think Before you Ban" explains that some schools in the US and Asia are already exploring the possibilities of mobile education.
Cell phones could give kids the opportunity to communicate and collaborate with each other both in and out of school, allow them to access supplemental content, get live help from tutors, play educational games and see animated visuals. Smartphones especially could help close the digital divide and give kids hands-on learning with the technology that is shaping the future. If mobile improves the quality of education, then maybe teachers would no longer mind when students use text speak in their work. Just so long as they don’t phone it in.
Singapore and North Carolina are the first states to provide considerable funding to Mobile education programs. Both education boards are collaborting with NGO's and commercial institutions to incorporate modern technology into education systems.
For an in-depth analysis of the way mobile education and Google COULD go, I highly recommend a documentary set in Colorado at Arapahoe High School in 2020. It's absolutely brilliant, well worth the 10 minutes it will take you. Its down below...grab a drink and check it out
