The End of Cruising
July 4th 2008 03:55
With petrol now topping out at $1.60 per Litre and tanks costing over $100 to fill, cruising is on the decline. If the upward trend on fuel prices continues we can expect to see more teens spending their time this coming summer hanging out at the beach, in shopping centres and cinemas.
The price hike has come so quickly that as yet the Federal and State governments have not yet developed statistics to support a change in youth driving habits. Parents and teenage drivers will be forced to make hard choices in the future.
Because of increased energy costs and the expenses associated with running a household, parents are no longer able to support their children by paying for fuel. As a result teenagers will not only be driving less but also paying for their own fuel. Long trips up and down the coast could become a thing of the past over the summer holidays.
The ridiculous cost of insurance for those under 25 (especially males) coupled with rising petrol prices could mean the teenager dream of owning your own car will be out of reach for Generation Y.
Traditionally in small country towns and regional centres like mine, going for a cruise has been something like a right of passage for teenagers with their first cars on Friday and Saturday nights. They roll around, windows down, music blaring waving at each other and sharing their first smoke. But those days might well be coming to a close.
Kids this school holidays will be driving to meeting places and then walking around. Rather than cruising. And the police should be happy too. The trend will almost certainly lead to fewer traffic incidents and less racing around town streets.
But on the bright side, students will increasingly be forced to car pool and use public transport which can only be beneficial.
