Australia's obesity epidemic is out of control. Associate Professor Katherine Samaras of St Vincent's hospital told a federal parliamentary committee on Monday that more than 60% of Australians are overweight or obese.
Professor Samaras the hidden health care costs related to obesity in Australia are in the millions. More than 80% of Diabetics fall into this category too, as do 75% of hip replacement recipients.
The Solution??? TAX SUGAR!!!!
With modern refrigeration and other preservatives there really is no need for us to be consuming so much sugar in our day to day lives.
What am i suggesting?
1. That the state and federal governments should MASSIVELY INCREASE THE TAX ON THE DOMESTIC USE OF SUGAR to such an extent that a can of coke costs about $20. Now wouldn't that make you think twice about how much you need a soft drink?
2. In order to maintain all effective sugar crops as valuable economic products and ensure that no jobs are lost as a result of legislation, sugar production in Australia should be conducted primarily for export and bio fuel production.
3. That because of the health risks associated to artificial sweeteners like aspartame, a large study into their effective use as preservatives be undertaken independent of all previous US and EU studies.
4. That no products containing a large amount of sugar E.g. "Junk Food" be allowed to advertise to children or be sold at or within 100m of any school in the country.
5. Legislate that the importation of "Junk Food" be made immediately illegal.
Think of the enormous savings to our communites. The eventual result will be drastic reductions in the levels of obesity, breast cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and dental problems.
