Smart Phones and Mobile Applications

The launch of Apple’s new 3G iPhone has been met with much interest, from both consumers and other smart-phone makers. Following its introduction to the Australian market, operators such as LG and BlackBerry have been racing to introduce touch screen handsets to compete with the iPhone.
But have they missed the point? We don’t really care about the touch screen. I mena it’s nice but come one. What we love is the apps.
As if the iPhone needed more selling points, the interface is light-months ahead of Windows Mobile, BlackBerry and Palm OS. Not to mention that it has an iPod! Despite the fact that most modern phone sport some kind of music playback function, users have still been sticking to their good old iPods. But with the iPhone they don’t need to.
The handset is sleek and performs more than adequately. But the biggest selling point isn’t the Safari Web Browser, it’s the applications that come with it. Why is the iPhone selling better than other smart-phones? Apple have learned. The original iPhone was only ok when it was introduced to the North American market. But the 3G model is much much better. The mobile apps that are available through the iPhone browser are almost as good as its build in functions. Either way, they seem flawless.
When it comes to smart-phones, Apple has it right. They don’t by any means have the most mobile apps, but the design advantages are noticeable. Good to see more touch screens but the other makers still have a ways to come.
