Shocking Smoking Facts

August 18th 2008 04:07
One in two lifetime smokers will die from their habit - with a third of those deaths occurring in middle age.

More than 6,500 people died of smoking-related illness in NSW last year.

11.7% of deaths in Australia each year are linked to smoking.

Tobacco is responsible for 1 in 5 cancer deaths in NSW.

NSW Health spends more than $250 million a year treating tobacco-related illness. That's the equivalent of 3000 full-time nurses of 50,000 elective surgery procedures.

The indirect cost of smoking to the NSW economy, including lost productivity and wages, has been estimated at $6.6 billion per year.

Smoking is by far the leading cause of lung cancer, with 4 out of 5 lung cancers linked to tobacco.

Five year survival rates of most cancers in NSW are very high, with 63 percent of all cancers likely to be cured. But the survival rate from lung cancer is just 14 percent.

Half of all people diagnosed with lung cancer will be dead within a year of diagnosis.

Good stuff, Timmy, now you are on my wave length.

Sorry to rain on your parade, TimmyH. 87.3% of deaths in Australia are NOT smoking related.

I don't just say this because I'm a smoker, honest. I say this because all the hysteria has gotten way out of hand. Here in the USA, there are places outdoors where we can't smoke! There are places where people aren't allowed to smoke in their own homes or their own vehicles. Punitive taxes have raised the price of a pack of LEGAL cigarettes 500% beyond what they actually cost.

Even the World Health Organization had to admit that the "2nd hand smoke kills" campaign is a bunch of crappola. All the extra money that's collected from cigarette smokers was designated for a series of NON-SMOKING things, like education and medical bills. Where does it really go? Into pet projects and things that nobody in their right mind would support.

The tobacco industry helped build America and other countries. It pays more taxes than any other business and is the only business that has been forced to try to prevent people from using its product. It made Al Gore (the biggest, loudest mouth against tobacco) a multi-millionaire.

If it were really as dangerous as the "know-it-all politicians" claim, why hasn't it been made illegal? If it were totally responsible for as many death as they claim, why has it not been taken off the market?

Simple answer. MONEY.

S.L. Watch an Episode of the British Show "Yes, Prime Minister" called "Smokescreen".

I believe it's episode 3 in season 1. And you will find out exactly why cigarettes can't be taken out of circulation as simply as one might hope.

I don't feel the need to outline the negative impacts of cigarettes any further, the statistics speak for themselves.

Yes Sir Humphrey would say..."Statistics? You can prove anything with statistics...even the truth."

Cheers

You can prove anything with statistics, Timmy. Look at the crock Al Gore has foisted on everyone in the last few years? It's finally being seen for the fraud that it is. Like polls, statistics can be manipulated. It seems to work better of you "follow the money" than if you listen to the pollsters and statisticians when there's any doubt.

I don't think we get "Yes, Minister" here, although it did get played on PBS some years ago.

It's sad that you have access to shows as stupidly irrelevent as "The Apprentice". But not the quality of british programming...very sad.

But on Al Gore, I think the point would be that to over exaggerate and induce a reaction might be more socially responsible than to ignore the issue and suggest that it doesn't exist.

There's a lot of programming I'd like to get, but my cable provider doesn't "provide."

Making a huge financial "to-do" about something that doesn't exist, and doing it solely for profit is pretty bad, Timmy. Man-caused global warming/cooling/climate change is a crock that is making a few dishonest people very wealthy.

The 2nd hand smoke fraud is the same thing. If smoking bothers you, stay away from it. Don't go to where people are allowed to smoke and disrupt their rights just to force your agenda (not you personally, Timmy. People like Gore and the "smoking nazis.") I respect the rights of others and don't light up around people who don't like it. However, I don't appreciate being told where and when I can smoke if it isn't really likely to be a problem for someone else.

Ahhh so you feel that it is not the right of your government to tell you what to do??

Then how about legalising:

Stem Cell research
Bestiality
Incest
Euthenasia
Cocaine
Heroin
Ecstasy
Amphetamines
Suicide
Loitering
J-Walking
Arsenic

So long as people keep it private and don't hurt anybody else?

This might deserve a real post...

Don't be silly, TimmyH. The governments job is to protect society from frauds and criminal behavior. Your list falls into one category or the other.

I vote to legalize all those things, plus bounty hunters. If they are going to whinge about cigarettes, lets see a damaged liver on our beer cans, and a fat clogged artery on our big macs.
