Online parenting - Generation X v's Y
July 4th 2008 04:34
A new study from the Bonnier Corporation’s Parenting Group has proved that mums’ activities are evolving with the digital age. The group compared the online behaviour of Generations Y and X and found that although they share similar interests, they use the Internet very differently.
The results showed that Generation Y mums use the Internet to connect with other parents, usually through blogs, social networking sites, and by creating and sharing videos. Generation X on the other hand tends to gravitiate towards task-based activities like online shopping, searching products, reading reviews and surfing through news and cultural articles.
The data, complied by NewMediaMetrics suggests that the different behaviours exhibited by the Generations are a result of different media use, not of differences in parenting. Although Generation Y is far more likely to go online for parenting advice and networking, Generation X is far less connected.
- 149 Gen Y women vs. 71 Gen X women own a blog
- 160 vs. 86 read others’ blogs
- 148 vs. 78 maintain an online profile
- 154 vs. 96 create/share their own videos
- 156 vs. 105 participate in an online community of mums
Perhaps this trend is more an illustration of the differences between the media use of the Generations rather than a measure of their parenting styles. But it is interesting that Generation X parents are more inclined to get parenting advice from friends, neighbours and family members than those who are just now entering their child raising years.
