Mobilising the Western World
June 26th 2008 06:09
Thirty countries worldwide have exceeded 100% per capita mobile phone usage says a new report from Experian. The study found that there are over 2.7 billion mobile phones in the world. In 2001 around 13 percent of the Western World carried a mobile phone, but by 2011 that figure is expected to jump to over 70 percent. By comparison there are only around 850 million personal computers, 1.3 billion land lines and 1.5 billion television sets.
By 2006, more than 13 countries in the Western World had exceeded 100 percent of mobile phone usage. In the same year U.S. penetration was around 80 percent at 241 million units. The American market isn’t expected to top the 100 percent mark until 2013.
A 2008 research paper from Simmons New Media has found that while over 50 percent of mobiles have been used for texting and making calls in the past thirty days, less than 5 percent are delving into the world of mobile GPS and online shopping.
Around 1.8 billion mobile phone users are actively using text messaging which equates to over two thirds of the “Mobile Community” and is more than double the number of active email subscribers. On average an SMS is read less than 15 min after it is sent and responded to within an hour.
SMS users view text messaging as an important source of information and entertainment as well as a means of communicating with their friends, colleagues and significant others. Apple’s innovation touch-screen based user interface, used on its iPhone, is also fast becoming the norm in mobile layouts.
According to the Simmons New Media Study, over a third of mobile users suggest that they would be interested in receiving advertisements via their mobile provided there is a tangible incentive. This presents many opportunities for sales and marketing teams of all sorts.
