Kids and Television - The end is nigh

How are kids using media? Well we know that the Internet is booming. That’s not news. But is television suffering? What devices are being used to watch television, how they are kids finding and storing programs. A recent study from Cal Berkeley explains.
Millennials are sick of everyone telling them what to do? Go figure. But when it comes to TV they are now scheduling their own programs and controlling their viewing habits. Parents are no longer making television decisions for their kids. Most now have virtually complete freedom when it comes to viewing the big home screen.
- Nearly 100% of Gen Y’s control what they watch
- More than half watch television programs on their computer
- More than half are storing television programs for later viewing
- Nearly two-thirds use a DVR to store their shows
Despite the fact that social networks are the big talking point of the moment, Millennials aren’t using them to discuss television. While most will learn about TV shows from one another they will almost certainly talk about them face to face in…wait for it….normal conversation.
- 80% of Gen Y’s learn about TV shows from friends and ads
- Almost 90% prefer word of mouth to talk about TV trends
- Just 14% use social networks to share opinions about television programs
And TV still controls money in many ways. Almost 80 percent of Gen Y’s have purchased something relating to a TV show, with almost 20 percent buying clothing that a TV character has been seen in.
