Japan to limit childrens' mobile use
May 30th 2008 04:44
Reports indicate that Japanese youngsters are getting so addicted to Internet-linking mobile phones that the government is starting a program warning parents and schools to limit their use among children.
The program is based on government and parental concerns about the internet being misused for extortion and a variety of other net crimes.
The government is worried that primary and high school students are getting sucked into cyberspace crimes as both perpetrators and victims and suffering other negative effects of cellphone overuse.
Hiroya Masuda, the telecommunications minister, said Tuesday that electronics makers must develop cellphones that are safe for children. "The ministry will be naturally stepping up efforts to ask makers to develop phones with limited features," he explained in a Television interview.
In Japan., mobile phones have become seen as expensive toys with most partents more than willing to purchase them for their children. But the risks associated with 3G technology and the constant internet access that these phones allow for are expected to have ramifications. IThere is a chance that tax incentives and government grants will be given to companies to produce mobile with limited technological access, specifically designed for children.
These tools and toys could soon become one of the first significant reactions against Internet technology for the protection of children to be contrived between government and private industry.
