How YOU can lower petrol prices

June 18th 2008 05:53
Oil prices are through the roof with no decline in sight. The Rudd Government's FuelWatch program is unlikely to offer much relief to Australian motorists. And the alternatives to petrol powered vehicles are few and far between. But...there is a solution, and it's something we can all do.

BOYCOTT PETROL!

Nooooo you say? Let me clarify. Boycott a single petrol company. That's right, a public embargo. It doesn't necessarily matter which company is chosen, any will do.

Here's how it works.

1. The entire petrol purchasing Australian public bands together and refuses to buy petrol from one of the major oil companies, BP, Shell, Caltex.

2. After a few weeks, probably less, that particular oil company will notice this shift in purchasing.

3. Lack of profit, indeed lack of any sale whatsoever will mean that this particular petrol company has two choices, either reduce the cost of its fuel in order to compete with the other fuel suppliers, or withdraw from the Australian market.

4. The company has too much money invested in infrastructure to withdraw from the market and will henceforth reduce the price of petrol. Despite the fact that oil prices are rising, the company will bare the cost in order to keep its operation running.

5. As soon as one major oil company reduces the price of fuel, Australian consumers end the embargo and start to buy this fuel because the price is lowest.

6. Because of the move towards this company, all others will also reduce their price in order to maintain market share.

7. As soon as one company jacks their prices back up the Australian public refuses to buy from them again and moves to another company searching for the best price.'

The only way for this to potentially work is to ensure a VERY significant part of the population is part of the movement, if not the entire population. If all the petrol companies decide to maintain prices with some internal consultation they will be found by the ACCC to be price fixing.

WIN WIN FOR CONSUMERS!!!

What do we think?
