GoogleMedia has the Big Boys Running Scared
August 20th 2008 08:27
The advent of Google’s own online encyclopedia “Knol” which was launched three weeks ago, has led media companies to begin fearing that the search giant will soon become the leading media player.
The Knol service, which lets posters retain editorial control of their user-generated content, gets some of the most highly placed search results on the Google search function and could potentially create a market dominance that far outstrips that of Wikipedia.
With further acquisitions like YouTube and Blogger, Google is positioning itself to create a media empire through the Internet that few others will be able to match.
“The question in people’s minds is how unbiased can Google be as it grows and grows and grows,” says Wenda Harris Millard, the co-chief executive of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia.
Blogger, one of the most popular blogging services has ben in Google’s hands for some time. The company is also digitising books, collecting online discussion forums and beginning publication of stock news with Google News and Google Finance.
