Gen Y Crucial to Technology Uptake
July 23rd 2008 01:36
According to a new report by the Forrester Research Inc. of Cambridge has revealed that Generation Y sets the pace for technology adoption in society today.
The Forrester marketing intelligence firm was commissioned to produce a study which showed how quickly the different generations are able to adapt to changing technology. The report titled “The State of Consumers and Technology: Benchmark 2008,” says that nine out of ten Gen Y’s own a personal computer, and 82 percent own a mobile phone.
Gen Y’s apparently spend more time online (both for leisure and work) than they do watching TV, a dramatic departure from previous generations. 72 percent of Gen Y mobile phone owners send and receive text messages and 42 percent are using their mobiles for surfing the web and checking email. This later figure is up from around 30 percent last year and indicates a major shift in the use of mobile technology.
Forrester says that members of Generation X (those aged in their 30’s and just either side) generally use emerging technologies to support an existing lifestyle need. “Technology is so deeply embedded in everything Gen Y’s do that they are truly the first native online population.”
Although Generation Y is relatively small, at only around two thirds of Generation X, it’s members are crucial to the uptake of technology in the broader community. Charles Golvin, principal analyst at Forrester Research says that “Gen Y is the audience that most companies are struggling to understand right now because it's key to their future revenue growth.”

Generally about nothing.
But do keep us informed, it seems I must be something of a Gen Y, I meet at least some of the requirements.
