Facebook getting back to its Student Roots
August 20th 2008 08:59
The Fall semester is about to start in the Northern Hemisphere, but Facebook says that’s not the only reason that it’s trying to get back to its University roots. The social networking site began with Harvard undergraduates but quickly grew to potentially encompass anyone with an email address. Now Facebook is trying to reconnect with its original users who have become disenfranchised with the site’s redesign.
Facebook is encouraging the development of Apps that are more student-friendly, like…
“CourseFeed”, which recently won a grant from the fbFund to produce pages that let students share course notes and link content between schools.
“PodClass”, which lets students record and share classes.
“Schools”, funded by the Founders Fund, which could be a paid service that universities will buy for their students to allow for better networking.
Facebook has clearly seen that is they lose their core base, the uni student, they will also lose that which made them unique in the social networking landscape. While there are those of us that wish the site still catered exclusively to students, this is at least something that will keep us around a while longer.
