Double Panted Drug Dealers
August 12th 2008 03:16
When it comes to pushing pills and buying bud times have changed. A decade ago drug dealers would have a paper strapped to their belt buckle, then baseball caps were widely employed to try and conceal illegal products. Now it seems that dealers are getting more dressed up than ever for work.
Police in Boston and the UK have reported that drug dealers commonly wear two pairs of pants in an attempt to conceal drugs from police officers. A study by the International Narcotics Interdiction Association has found that the trend is becoming more common across the globe.
While it might seem like a simple ploy, dealers in custody have reported, somewhat ironically, that it is a very effective method. Bags of crack cocaine, marijuana and ecstasy can easily be concealed in inside pockets for distribution. If dealers don’t draw attention to themselves by running from police or selling in public places the double pants method reportedly reduces a lot of the associated stresses both for dealers and law enforcement.
The INIA is a not for profit organisation that provides narcotics training for law enforcement services. The authors of the study also say that wearing multiple layers of clothing has been common for dealers who expect to become involved in foot pursuits. Shedding a shirt or pair of pants easily changes a suspect’s appearance and can often let them blend back into the street.
UK police say that the method only has a limited effect when police are informed and educated about the practice. In reality, dealers have probably adopted the practice from shoplifters during the 80’s and 90’s.
But fashion experts and bloggers have repeatedly reminded us that the trend has nothing to do with fashion, we are far more likely to see underwear sticking out above waistlines than we are to see another pair of daks.
