Does Generation Y REALLY love being Wired?
June 26th 2008 05:08
A new OTX study has shown that while the average Y Gen spends 12 hours online a week, they would rather be out in almost every situation. Given the choice, teens would rather interact with their real friends than Internet associates, date someone from high school than Net and go shopping rather than browse online.
Less than 10 percent of respondents said they had a lot of online friends and only the devil’s 13 would date someone they met online. Three quarters would rather go without Internet than television and a similar number would give up the net before their mobile phone.
So while for the last decade or so we’ve been told that online is the way to go, even the tech-savvy Y Gens are still not inclined to put all their faith in cyberspace.
The study also found that when teens are going online, they don’t actually “Surf” the web. Instead the most popular features of the Internet for Generation Y seems to be instant messaging, with social networking coming in a close second.
President of Media and Entertainment Insights for OTX, Bruce Friend, says “Many of their (Generation Y) online activities take place simultaneously... our Longitudinal Media Experience (LMX) study confirms that teenagers are often heavy simultaneous media users.”

Frankly though it's not the internet that bothers me so much but the fact that everyone is expected to be in instant contact with everyone else at all times.
The proverbial "mobile" has become such an inseperable part of our lives that I think quite a few people have actually forgotten how to talk to the person in front of them (ever seen a date watch a partner spend half of it on a phone...
I think it's sad that we have so little private time these days.
